History, Geography, Art and DT

Each separate subject here at St Mary's has a Lead teacher. In Wider learning there are a number of leaders including: Mrs Hill, our Wider Learning Project leader, Mrs Steele our Science leader, Mrs Amann our MfL and music specialist and Mr Reynolds our Computing expert and Curriculum lead. They collaborate effectively with others, to ensure that the provision in our Wider Learning Subjects is lively and fun, whilst demonstrating a progression in skills and concepts, alongside a love of learning and a desire to know and remember more about the projects they are introduced to.

Each subject also has a Link Governor, who supports and monitors progress, in conjunction with guidance from the SLT. In the case of Wider Learning, this is Mr Baker; an experienced teacher who holds the children of St Mary’s and their success close to her heart, also. He is thorough, supportive and well informed.

Each class has its own class page, where homework, projects and home communications are publicised and shared on a very regular basis.

Children at St Mary of the Angels love becoming immersed in their Wider Learning Projects. They are bespoke to the subjects of HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, ART or DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY. Skills and knowledge are taught and assessed effectively across each project. We use every opportunity to build upon prior knowledge, embed key vocabulary and celebrate a love and a passion for learning across the foundation subjects.

Our Key Knowledge Organisers can be found on the children's class pages. These help you to know what is being taught and when. Hopefully, they also give you a flavour of the type of vocabulary and the type of learning that will take place in each year for your child.

There are a selection of them below for you get a flavour of what they contain and how they can support learning at home.

A flavour of our children's views are below, so that you can see that we listen to children and they empower us to help them become effective leaders. You can also hear that our methods are effective.

"I enjoy working with others."
"I have learnt about using primary and secondary sources."
"I have enjoyed using a computer and an Atlas to look at maps."
"My favourite lessons involve sketching, blending and painting."
"Fieldwork, practical resources and using the Chromebooks to research help me know and remember more."
"We love our trips and visitors linked to our Wider Learning Projects!"
Key vocabulary is mapped and taught across each Wider Learning Project for each subject. This is enriching and  progressive. We place a strong emphasis on building on prior learning and vocabulary by revisiting key facts and knowledge at the start of each lesson and staff continually monitor pupils' progress towards this.
Here are some examples of our children's work which they are, quite rightly, very proud of.
